Handmade vs Machine-Made Rugs: What’s the Difference and Why It Matters
Share
Walk into any home décor store and you will find rugs at every price point. The difference in price is obvious. But what exactly are you paying for?
How They Are Made
Machine-Made Rugs
Machine-made rugs are produced on power looms that can weave very large quantities quickly, often using synthetic fibres such as polypropylene, polyester, or nylon.
Handmade Rugs
Handmade rugs are made by skilled artisans, one at a time. At Bodhi Artisans, we use hand-tufting: wool is tufted into a canvas backing by hand with a tufting tool. A single rug takes time and skill to complete.
Quality & Durability
Machine-made rugs often flatten and wear faster. Handmade wool rugs can last for decades with proper care, and many are passed down.
Feel & Comfort
Wool is warm, soft, and naturally temperature-regulating. There is no comparison underfoot.
Sustainability
Wool is natural, renewable, and biodegradable. Synthetic rugs can shed microplastics. Handmade rugs also support artisan livelihoods and traditional craft.
Value Over Time
Over time, a handmade wool rug that lasts for decades can cost less per year than a cheaper rug that needs replacing every few years, and it can look better throughout.
