How to Choose the Perfect Rug for Your Living Room

A rug is the foundation of a living room. Get it right, and everything else falls into place: the furniture feels anchored, the room feels complete, the space feels like home. Get it wrong, and even the most beautiful furniture can feel adrift.

At Bodhi Artisans, we make hand-tufted wool rugs with skilled artisans in India. Here is what to think about when choosing one for your living room.

1. Get the Size Right First

Size is the most common mistake people make when buying a rug. The most important rule: when in doubt, go bigger.

For a living room, you have three main options:

  • All legs on the rug: The most luxurious look. All furniture legs sit on the rug. Requires a large rug (typically 9×12 or larger for a standard sofa arrangement).
  • Front legs on the rug: The most popular choice. The front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on the rug, creating a connected, grounded feel. An 8×10 works well for most living rooms.
  • Rug as accent: A smaller rug placed in front of the sofa, not under it. Works best in open-plan spaces or as a secondary rug.

Tip: Use painter's tape to mark out the rug size on your floor before ordering. It takes five minutes and saves expensive mistakes. Our Rug Size & Shape Guide and the size finder on our homepage can help too.

2. Choose the Right Material

Material determines how a rug feels, how it wears, and how it looks over time. For living rooms, we recommend wool.

Why wool?

  • Naturally soft and warm underfoot
  • Durable, and can last for many years with proper care
  • Naturally stain-resistant, thanks to the lanolin in the fibre
  • Regulates temperature: warm in winter, cool in summer
  • Holds colour beautifully over time

Our rugs are hand-tufted using natural wool.

3. Match the Style to Your Interior

Your rug should feel like it belongs, not like it was placed there as an afterthought. Here is a quick guide by interior style:

  • Modern & Minimalist: Choose geometric patterns, solid colours, or abstract designs in a neutral palette. Sage green, ivory, and warm beige work beautifully.
  • Bohemian & Eclectic: Embrace pattern and colour. Traditional, Persian-inspired, or abstract rugs with rich tones add warmth and character.
  • Scandinavian: Clean lines, muted tones, and simple geometric patterns.
  • Classic & Traditional: Persian and oriental-inspired patterns in deep jewel tones or warm neutrals. Timeless and endlessly elegant.
  • Contemporary Luxury: Statement rugs with bold patterns or unexpected colours, such as animal prints, oversized geometrics, or rich terracotta tones.

4. Consider Pile Height

Pile height affects both the look and the practicality of a rug:

  • Low pile: Easy to clean, works well under furniture, great for high-traffic areas.
  • Medium pile: The most versatile. Comfortable underfoot, holds its shape well.
  • High pile: Luxuriously soft, but harder to clean and not ideal under heavy furniture.

5. Do Not Forget the Rug Pad

A quality rug pad keeps your rug in place, protects your floor, and adds an extra layer of cushioning. It also helps your rug last longer. We recommend using one.
